THE BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front)
Buy the game; especially if you are a fan of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch! But is it right for a busy dad? Keep reading?
The Good
The game is definitely worth all of the years we've waited since it's predecessor was released 6 years ago on March 3, 2017. It has been a long wait but this game doesn't disappoint. But is it right for a busy dad? Yes and no. True fans can expect more of the same from a Zelda game; the same story, exploration, action and the usual leveling up system of Link clearing temples and beating bosses to get his powers up for the big fight. But that's where the familiarity ends. They have added new functionality that allows you to fuse items/weapons and build devices to traverse and explore the world. And with this new and fun functionality brings a whole new opportunity for longer gameplay. And there's the rub.
The Bad
Then new play mechanics, while fun and hugely thought provoking, add a huge learning curve to this game. This directly conflicts with one of my three scoring factors of The Busy Dad Score. This learning curve adds a significant amount of time to accomplishing the some of the more simple tasks. Because this game is made to reward you for your small achievements without telling you how to do it, the fun factor and quick game factors are easily met. But I gotta take a star off for the learning curve giving Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a 2 out of 3 possible stars for busy dads. We usually don't have enough time to enjoy the quick wins when it takes so long to accomplish them because we're still learning the controls.
